A successful business is built on a strong foundation of talented, motivated, and engaged people. It is more than ever before recognised by many business leaders that their business has the chance to thrive when everyone is aligned and pulling in the same direction!

To ensure this, it is well worth conducting a HR health check on your business but not just any HR health check but one done by the CEO or other similar senior person.

More than ever before, now is the time for many business leaders to go back to basics and find out if their people can accelerate their business growth and deliver success that they desire.

My advice to all business owners and leaders is for them to Immerse yourself in the business and start asking a lot of questions even if you believe you have the answer as it will really help you find out what is really going on. This will help you understand what’s really going on and get to grips with how the business operates.

The process will help you get will get to grips with how the business really operates, the true ambitions and aspirations of the people who are operating it day to day, and the responsibilities and opinions of the team.

There are many ways to conduct this HR health check but the my advice is that this should focus on four key areas of

Business Strategy — is it understood? Do we all understand and appreciate our plans and their component effectively.

Leading — what are your middle managers and operations team doing / not doing?

Talent — how are you at retaining, recruiting and growing your people?

Culture across the business — are their shared values, beliefs, behaviours, and practices and do the team interact, communicate, and work together towards common goals?

With all areas above, the aim is for you to prioritise HR issues that have the biggest impact on the business. You should be able to come up with a people plan that invests in your people and by you focusing and leading on HR, you can create a workplace culture that fosters innovation, creativity, and growth.

Done right you will see the evidence of your work in your daily business life: and hopefully you will then worry less about people challenges and become more are confident in the stability, growth and succession of the business, and not only scale up as you want, but often commit to growing at a faster rate than you thought possible.
